The formula
VIT's FFCS Academic Regulations define GPA (what many students refer to elsewhere as SGPA) as the credit-weighted average of grade points earned in a single semester: multiply each course's grade point by its credits, add these up, then divide by the total credits registered that semester. CGPA applies the exact same formula across every course registered since you joined the programme, not just one semester.
VIT grading scale (Table-4, FFCS Regulations)
Every course you complete is awarded one of these letter grades, each carrying a fixed grade point on VIT's 10-point scale.

About VIT's grading system
VIT (Vellore Institute of Technology) runs its academic programmes under the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS), which lets students choose their own courses, faculty, and time slots each semester rather than following a fixed batch timetable.
Every course is graded on a 10-point scale, either through absolute grading (fixed marks bands, used for labs, projects, and small classes) or relative grading (graded against the class average and standard deviation, used for larger theory classes).
Regardless of which grading method applies to a given course, the resulting letter grade always converts to the same fixed grade point — which is what makes a single CGPA formula work consistently across every course, department, and campus.
