The formula
Following University Order No. 1584/2023/KTU dated 29 June 2023, KTU's Academic Council amended Regulation R6.21 of the 2019 Scheme so that the equivalent percentage of marks is calculated by simply multiplying your CGPA by 10 — no offset, no correction factor. A CGPA of 8.0 becomes 80.00%. This replaced the older formula, which subtracted a flat 2.5 from the ×10 result.

About APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University
APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, was established in 2014 as Kerala's first technological university. It is named after former President and scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
KTU affiliates a large network of engineering, MCA, and MBA colleges across Kerala, standardising curriculum, examinations, and grading across all of them rather than leaving each college to grade independently.
Unlike some universities that keep a fixed conversion multiplier indefinitely, KTU revised its own formula in 2023 after sustained feedback from students that the old −2.5 offset was hurting them in percentage-based rank lists used for jobs and competitive exams.
Because KTU runs multiple regulation "Schemes" (2015, 2019, 2024) side by side depending on when a student joined, the exact formula and grade table that applies to you depends on your admission year — always check which Scheme your grade card falls under.
Frequently asked questions
As per the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University Academic Council resolution (23rd meeting, 9 June 2023, item 023.3.13), the official formula for the 2019 Scheme is Percentage = CGPA × 10. This replaced the earlier formula of CGPA × 10 − 2.5.
Using the current official formula, an 8.5 CGPA equals exactly 85%.
Student organisations petitioned the university to drop the −2.5 constant, pointing out that it put KTU graduates at a disadvantage in competitive exam and job application rank lists compared to students from other universities using a plain ×10 formula. The Academic Council approved the change on 9 June 2023, and the Vice Chancellor sanctioned it via University Order No. 1584/2023/KTU dated 29 June 2023.
Under the original 2019 Scheme Regulation R6.21, the formula was Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 2.5. This is now superseded by the ×10 formula for current use, though older transcripts issued before the 2023 order may still reflect it.
The University Order we reviewed explicitly amends Regulation R6.21 of the 2019 Scheme. Some student resources report that the University applied the revised formula to all graduating students regardless of scheme, but we could not independently confirm this scope from the primary order text alone — if you're on the 2015 Scheme, confirm your applicable formula with your college examination cell or the KTU academic section.
